When the discharge stops, water quality doesn’t snap back instantly. Downstream, there is a zone where pollutants gradually diminish as mixing, dilution, dispersion, biodegradation, and sedimentation reduce concentrations and the system returns toward its natural state. That stretch is called the zone of recovery, emphasizing the process of water quality reestablishing baseline conditions after the disturbance ends. This differs from a zone of dilution, which focuses on mixing during the discharge, and from the disturbance phase, which is the period of impact while the discharge is ongoing.
